Q
Do I really need to make sure that
all my Visit Leaders are trained?
Within a school or education setting there
may be only one EVC, but the majority
of your teaching staff are likely to run an
educational visit. Can you honestly say that they
all understand their responsibilities in law and are
following current national guidance?
Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974,
employers must ensure that staff have the skills and
knowledge to do the job, which is why at EVOLVE
Advice we insist that all staff leading visits upload
evidence of Visit Leader training and renew this every
three years.
Training can be in house or external – as long as it
covers the key responsibilities and messages and the
trainer is competent.
A
Visit Leaders should be trained in planning, risk
assessment and visit management, supervision,
inclusion, and preventing and managing emergencies.
Ultimately this is about the safety of children and
young people on visits, so ask yourself (and be honest)
– does every member of your visit team have the skills
and knowledge they need to lead visits?
It's your responsibility to make sure that they do.
Speak to your adviser about training options and
materials – at EVOLVE Advice we offer live online
training and e-learning options for visit teams. Other
training providers are also available.
