Everyone wants a full and exciting visits programme, but funding remains a significant challenge.
Schools need to be more resourceful than ever to meet the cost, and you have to reassure
parents that visits are worth the expense. Here are some ideas to get you started...
FIND WAYS TO
CUT THE COST
Start with the big picture by putting
together a whole-school plan
of your key visits. Work out the
estimated cost for these visits – is it
reasonable? Then look for ways to
reduce the cost from the very start:
• Book well ahead and seek out
advance booking discounts.
• Consider a cheaper destination,
itinerary or time of year for the
same outcome.
• Talk to providers about working
within your budget, perhaps
adapting an existing itinerary.
• As well as the big-ticket items,
consider day visits to add variety
at lower cost.
• Ask charities, museums, libraries,
wildlife trusts, sports centres and
businesses in your local area what
they can offer.
Teacher Tapp data in 2025
showed that 35% of primary
and 24% of secondary school
leaders expected to cut back
on educational visits
to ease money pressures1
GET PARENTS
ON BOARD
Families are feeling the pinch, and
when paired with other concerns
about a school visit – How far away
is it? Will my child be safe? – this can
lead to reluctance to agree to visits.
The key is to address both of these
issues right from the start.
WHAT YOU
CAN DO
• Share your complete visit calendar
with parents at the start of the
academic year and set out the
costs clearly.
• Explain what each visit will
achieve in terms of education
and personal development so
that parents see the value of the
programme.
• Communicate clearly the details
of each visit. Visit providers can
often supply information or talk
to parents, so do use them.
• Offer a payment plan to give
families time to spread the cost
and save up for the major events.
