Educational Visits Adviser at
EVOLVE Advice
Farm and zoo visits are far more
than just enjoyable outings; they are
dynamic, educational experiences
that can leave a lasting impression.
By connecting classroom lessons
with the natural world and offering
rich sensory learning, these visits can
contribute meaningfully to academic
and personal development and can
encourage a deeper
appreciation for
nature and animals.
Consider your venue carefully
Check if they hold the Learning Outside the Classroom
Quality Badge, showing that they have been assessed for
safe practice and learning outcomes. If not, ask them to
complete a provider form to check their suitability.
If you are visiting a farm or venue that doesn’t have
regular school visits – for example, your local farm
– work closely with the farmer to identify hazards and
control measures for your risk assessment. It is essential
that the farm holds appropriate insurance for visiting
school groups.
Visit the venue in advance to carry out a pre-visit risk
assessment and discuss safety rules with the staff,
including if any special clothing is needed (e.g. boots
rather than trainers).
You’ll need to complete an event-specific risk assessment
– ask your adviser for support if you need it.
