RESEARCH: Autism and
educational visits
New research into the experience of autistic pupils on
educational visits reveals that the greatest barriers
to participation are sensory issues (80%), behaviour
regulation (73%) and staffing constraints (71%).
Safeguarding expert Andrew Hall surveyed 487 schools
to identify issues and form recommendations for staff
leading or overseeing educational visits. Key takeaways
include:

• Success depends more on preparation and support
than on the destination itself.
• Visual preparation tools (visual guides, social stories)
significantly reduce anxiety and improve participation.
• 1:1 support and flexible planning are vital for
inclusion, especially during transitions and
high-demand moments.
