STAYING ON TOPIC
At Eleanor Palmer Primary School in north London,
every visit is linked to the curriculum. Rosie Thomson,
Deputy Head and EVC, explains how and why it matters
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL VISIT PROGRAMME
We’re a topic-based school, so we focus on a particular
subject all term – history, geography or science – alongside
maths and English. Each year group studies a topic or
topics within that subject, and we plan all our visits around
that. Every visit has a clear educational purpose; we don’t
do theme parks or holidays, it has to be curriculum-based
and full of enrichment.
WHAT DOES YOUR VISIT-PLANNING LOOK LIKE?
We have a very comprehensive planning process that we’ve
built up over the years, which is used across the school.
Every topic has a detailed plan, which will say something
like ‘Lessons 1 to 3 build up to visiting the British Museum’
and it talks the teacher through what they need to do
before, during and after a visit.

Beyond
Our planning checklist goes beyond the logistics of a visit,
the approvals and transport and so on, to include what
background knowledge the teacher needs, what the visit is
for, and how to capture the learning afterwards. That was a
really useful tip that I took away from EVC training; it makes
all the difference if the teachers include those things in
their plan.

“I’m really proud of the changes we’ve
implemented to make all our visits
curriculum-led. Our children always
know what we’re going to do, and
what we’ll be learning so they’re ready
to take it all in when they arrive.”
