Visit evaluation
Is your visit
hitting the mark?
Educational visits are not an add-on to learning, they are a
powerful teaching tool. But how do you know that your visits
are effective?
Guidance is clear that educational visits should be planned, delivered and
evaluated against clear learning outcomes. Without evaluation, visits risk
becoming ‘nice days out’ rather than purposeful learning.
EVALUATION ANSWERS THREE
KEY QUESTIONS FOR SCHOOLS:
1 Did the visit achieve its intended
learning outcomes?
2 What impact did it have on pupils’
knowledge, skills or attitudes?
3 What should we keep, change
or improve next time?
This reflective stage completes the
visit cycle and supports professional
accountability. When you’re planning
a visit, you identify the outcomes that
you want to achieve, so it’s important
to assess whether you succeeded.
Systems like EVOLVE support this
process by linking evaluation directly
to the outcomes identified at the
planning stage. Where the evaluation
module is enabled in EVOLVE, staff
can complete a structured post-visit
review that focuses on educational
impact rather than paperwork.
A good evaluation is proportionate,
honest and useful. It doesn’t need to
be lengthy, but it should clearly
reflect on whether pupils achieved
what was intended. Take some time
to review the experience with your
group; find out what they learned,
what they enjoyed and what could
be improved.
Remember to record challenges
or partial successes – these count
as valuable professional learning,
not failure.
Finally, make sure you debrief
fully with your DSL after every
residential visit.
Over time, consistent evaluation
helps schools to build an evidence
base that supports curriculum
development, provider choice, staff
development and quality assurance
for all of your educational visits.
