New legislation supports
outdoor education for all
Every young person in
Scotland now has a right
to a residential outdoor
education experience
thanks to legislation
proposed by MSP Liz Smith,
which was passed by the
Scottish Parliament in
December, receiving Royal
Assent in February.
Liz Smith said: “I am
delighted that the Scottish
Parliament overwhelmingly voted to pass the
Schools Residential Outdoor Education (Scotland)
Bill, meaning that far more young people across
Scotland will now be able to access residential
experiences than is currently the case.
“The evidence about the benefits of residential
outdoor education is compelling and, in an age
where the mental health of our younger generation
is increasingly under the microscope, these
benefits boost confidence, self-esteem and, most
importantly, resilience. They help to tackle problems
in our schools, most especially issues about
attainment, attendance and behaviour, and that
must be a good thing.
“I very much hope the passing of the Bill in Scotland
will inspire both England and Wales to pass similar
legislation in the near future.”
