FIRST AID
Resuscitation guidelines updated
Resuscitation Council UK has updated its
resuscitation guidelines. Important changes include
calling 999 first for any unresponsive person before
assessing breathing. The guidelines also introduce
first aid as a new chapter, recognising it as the

National Youth Strategy
The government has launched a 10-year plan for young
people, 'Youth Matters: Your National Youth Strategy'.
The strategy was co-produced with the sector and 14,000
young people aged 10-21, and up to 25 for those with
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. It aims to
ensure that ‘every young person across the country has
somewhere to go, someone who cares for them and a
community they feel part of’.
Included in the strategy is the ambition for ‘more
high-quality activities in and out of your classroom’.
Enrichment clubs, youth clubs, sport, culture, outdoor
and adventure and access to nature are all included in
the strategy.

GET INVOLVED: Could adventure
learning re-engage your
Year 9 pupils?
A major Education Endowment Foundation-funded
study is putting adventure learning to the test, examining
whether a five-day residential with The Outward Bound
Trust can help to re-engage Year 9 pupils at risk of
disengagement. Led by the University of York, the trial
will involve 1,584 pupils from 66 secondary schools
across England. Schools interested in taking part must
register their interest before 22 May.

Portugal updates entry requirements
for children
Portugal has updated its entry requirements for children
and young people travelling from the UK on a British
passport. Instead of a notarised letter, young passengers
now require ‘a letter of authorisation to travel from their
parent or guardian, together with a copy of their parent’s
or guardian’s passport’, signed and dated by the person
with parental responsibility. Full details are available
from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office
