Inclusive visits
Safeguarding is everyone’s
responsibility: involve the DSL
Your Designated Safeguarding
Lead (DSL) can advise on policies
around supervision, transport,
accommodation and the
involvement of volunteers.
They may also hold contextual
information about pupils that
should inform your planning.
Draw on those who know
the children best
Inclusion improves when pupils
and families feel part of the process,
not just informed about it
Finally, remember the practical
support available. Your school office
can help coordinate communication
and paperwork, and external
providers should be fully informed
of any individual needs. Involving
the whole visit team in planning and
risk assessment helps to ensure that
everyone understands their role.

Teaching assistants, pastoral staff
and colleagues who work closely
with pupils bring valuable insight.
They understand how children
respond in different environments
and can help you anticipate
challenges and plan appropriate
support.
Ask parents and carers to provide
up-to-date information; they are key
partners in planning for individual
needs. It is also important to involve
the pupils themselves. Sharing the
itinerary, answering questions or
using tools such as social stories
can help reduce anxiety and
build confidence.
