SCHOOL STORY: A DAY WITH A SILVERSMITH
Visiting individual makers
or artisans is very different
from attending a venue
that is used to hosting
school groups. They may
not have a Learning
Outside the Classroom
Quality Badge.
Ensure you follow
national guidance on
providers – ask them
to complete a provider
form (8.1q Provider
Statement) before you
visit and ensure that you
are confident that they
have the competence to
manage any significant
risks.
SIMON’S TOP TIPS
I found Anna through an online search of local makers.
Many artists subsidise their practice through offering
practical workshops and they really enjoy hosting older
students.
Before taking your students to visit a maker, there are a
few key checks you should make:
Pre-Visit –meet the practitioner first. Will they be a good fit
with your students? Is their working space suitable for your
group?
Safeguarding – it is possible they won’t have a DBS
certificate. Ensure that you have enough staff to supervise
your students for the whole session.
Health and safety – ask lots of questions, check their set up
using a provider form. Do they have an appropriate level
of public liability insurance and does it cover the activity
proposed? Do they have appropriate PPE and does the
venue and any equipment appear clean, well-maintained,
and safe?
Recommendations – check their reviews online, ask for
details of other groups they’ve hosted.

Conduct a thorough risk
assessment and have
contingency plans in
place.
If your visit includes any
activities or subjects of a
potentially hazardous or
sensitive nature (e.g. using
chemicals, fire, life models
etc.), check that this will
be permitted by your
employer and whether
you require parental
consent.
