INSPIRING A FUTURE IN STEM
In 2023, CERN opened its Science Gateway, a dedicated
environment inviting people to be inspired by science,
understand the huge variety of career paths in science,
and to learn new things.
School groups meet a team of enthusiastic volunteers
(all working at CERN in other capacities) and, through
video portals, hear from a diverse group of passionate
scientists sharing their stories.
VISITORS are immersed in the
world of particle physics from
the moment they enter
Beyond the exhibitions, is a range of interactive
activities, carefully tailored to different age groups,
and building on science education in schools. Lab
workshops cover topics from LEGO robotics and slime
to cloud chambers and electron beams, all with the aim
of promoting curiosity and science skills. Secondary
school groups can also take guided tours of the
research and engineering facilities – a truly memorable
experience!
Teacher tips
Start planning early: visits to CERN
are free but must be booked in
advance. You can book up to 9
months ahead.
You need to book your visit to
CERN direct, using a school email
address. Tour companies can’t do
this for you
Book lab workshops and guided
tours as soon as the booking
window opens. Spaces are very
limited and can fill up within a
couple of hours.

Students interact
with exhibits in the
Science Gateway.
Getting young people interested in science can be
difficult; class time doesn’t always allow for exploring
the many and varied specialist areas of science, or how
the concepts they learn in school can be translated into
impactful and exciting work in the future.
STEM subjects are increasingly in the spotlight
as schools seek to equip our children and young
people with the skills they’ll need for future careers.
Educational visits help to bring subjects like science,
maths and engineering to life, giving young people
insight into how these subjects influence the world
around us.
CERN is proud to play its part in inspiring the scientists
of the future through educational visits.
