RICHARD TWYNAM, MD AT EDWIN DORAN SPORTS TOURS
IS THE FUTURE OF SCHOOL
SPORT TOURS FEMALE?
Richard Twynam joined Edwin Doran Sports Tours in January this year. We asked
him about the role of tour operators in supporting schools and heard about the
company’s drive to put girls’ sport in the spotlight.
What are you most proud of
about Edwin Doran Sports
Tours?
RT: We have an incredible team
of people that really believe in
the transformative nature of
sports tours for young people’s
personal development, cultural
experience, and sporting ability.
I’m proud to be trusted with the
future of Edwin Doran Sports
Tours as it marks a milestone
fiftieth year of supporting school
sports tours. This is a forwardlooking company, with a strong
vision for its future.
In 50 years’ time, we want to
be as famous for girls tours
and empowering female
participation in sport as we are
for rugby tours to South Africa
and we’re already making a
great start.

Sports tours are
instrumental in nurturing
sporting talent and igniting
a passion for sports.
Why should schools consider running sports tours?
RT: Playing in unfamiliar
environments against teams
with different priorities and
tactics challenges players’
priorities and physical
abilities. For example,
playing a team in a township
in South Africa will be
very different from a local
derby with a nearby school.
Players need to adapt their
approach, which helps
improve teamwork too.
Travelling overseas helps
students to develop
independence, particularly
on longer tours with more
time away from home. The
more that young people
travel and experience the
world, the more we break
down prejudice, creating
better sports people and
better teammates as a
result.
