ASSOCIATION FOR
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Who?
Why?
The Association for Physical
Education (afPE) is the national
subject association for PE.
It is a professional membership
organisation dedicated to promoting
physical education in the UK.
Its mission is to support educators
and ensure that physical education
and school sport is at the heart of
school life, helping young people
develop the knowledge, skills and
wellbeing they need to thrive.
What? afPE offers training, curriculum guidance and publications to
support staff delivering PE and school sport. It publishes comprehensive
guidance on safeguarding students and staff in curricular and extracurricular activities: ‘Safe Practice in Physical Education, School Sport and

INSTITUTE FOR OUTDOOR LEARNING

Who?
Why?
The Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) is
the professional charity for organisations
and individuals who use the outdoors to
make a positive difference to others.
It is a membership organisation, offering
individual and organisational (e.g. school)
membership.
Outdoor learning is about engaging
with the outdoors for developmental
and educational purposes. It involves making the
most of outdoor experiences so that children, young
people and adults can become happier, healthier and
more connected to others, their communities and the
environment.

Support for you: IOL’s teaching hub collates good practice, professional development and
resources for professionals in outdoor learning who work with or for children’s services and
education in the UK. IOL also publishes guidance on High Quality Outdoor Learning to help guide

→ Recognition for your students: The IOL offers the National Outdoor Learning Award
Scheme (NOLA), a free award which recognises the personal development of participants during a
