WHAT TO TELL YOUR DSL about the visit:
Location and travel plans
Activities and provider
Who is in the group (staff, individuals and
volunteer helpers)
Accommodation (if applicable)
Make sure there is DSL cover if
your visit is outside the school
day and/or out of term time,
and know how to contact
them.
If there is immediate danger
or risk of harm, any adult in
your group should contact
children’s social care or the
police directly – don’t wait for
your DSL. Also, check that the
students know who they can
talk to about any concerns.
YOUR CHECKLIST
→ Involve your DSL early in
your visit planning.
→ Risk-assess vulnerable
pupils and/or staff.
→ Ensure appropriate
selection, vetting, induction
and training of staff and
volunteers.

SUPERVISION CHECK
When planning your visit,
remember that effective
supervision is a vital part of
safeguarding. You’ll need to
have appropriate supervision
in place; think about staff
competence, activities, your
group and your location
(distance and environment).
Consider your accommodation
needs, including privacy,
group dynamics, higher-risk
individuals and staffing. Peerto-peer relationships and
sexualised behaviour should
also be taken into account.
Speak to your Adviser if you
need support.
SAFEGUARDING
WITH PROVIDERS
Providers involved in
educational visits must ensure
that appropriate safeguarding
and child protection
arrangements are in place;
many will have their own
named DSL.
Quality assurance schemes
such as the LOtC Quality
Badge include checks on
safeguarding. If your provider
doesn’t hold an LOtC Quality
Badge, they may need to
complete a provider form,
e.g. OEAP NG 8.1q Provider
Statement.
Before the visit, discuss and
agree with the provider/activity
leader who is responsible for
what, including supervision
arrangements. If you have any
specific safeguarding needs
or vulnerable participants, talk
to your provider in advance
so that they can make the
necessary preparations.
To learn more about sharing
safeguarding with providers,
see opposite; and if in doubt,
always ask your Adviser.
