I really liked being away from
everywhere and seeing the
stars, I’ve never seen that
many where I live in the city
F.D., Year 10
Our stay at YHA Edale was a huge success. With the help
and encouragement of staff and activity leaders, our
students had a brilliant time trying lots of new activities,
including rock-hopping, archery, team-building, denbuilding and rafting. They even went on a night walk. The
visit also strengthened their friendships and their bonds
with the staff. We asked them to keep journals, and their
comments showed that the visit exceeded their (and our)
expectations. The phrase “I didn’t think I’d do it” came up
often – but they did it!
CRAIG ’ S ADVICE FOR EVCs
* Check what paperwork, risk assessments
and authorisation are needed, and how far
ahead – it can take some time.
* Visit the residential centre to assess the
facilities, ask questions and take photos to
show your students.
* Encourage the students to take part in the
planning, and to think about what they want
to achieve.
* Have options ready for each activity to
ensure everyone can achieve something.

The kayaking was such
fun, especially jumping
into the water afterwards.

FLYING HIGH WITH NEST
Nottingham Education Sanctuary Team
(NEST) is part of HHELC. We provide a year’s
full-time education for refugees and asylum
seekers aged 16–19 who may have arrived too
late in the term or with insufficient English
to attend another educational setting.
Educational visits such as trips to the
theatre and to a local allotment are vital
for broadening our students’ horizons and
enriching their learning.
But the highlight of the school calendar is
when our NEST students celebrate the end
of their final exams by spending the day at
Holme Pierrepont Country Park. This is a
multi-activity centre offering watersports,
mini-golf, archery and a high ropes trail.
The aim is to cement their friendships,
develop teamwork and leadership skills and
encourage the students to step out of their
comfort zone. It’s always a great day out,
and our students leave NEST with happy
memories and the benefit of their new
experiences.
Craig Matthews has worked for HHELC for 10 years
and is passionate about giving opportunities
to learners who have faced many barriers to
education for a range of reasons.
