FIRST AID ON
EDUCATIONAL VISITS
We asked health and safety specialists edSAFETY for some advice on first aid for school visits,
from what training you need to what essentials to keep in your kit
1
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR FIRST AID ON
EDUCATIONAL VISITS?
The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981
state that schools and educational settings must
provide first-aid equipment and facilities for employees
and young people in their care, and this applies to off-site
visits as well. When you do your risk assessment and
visit planning, think about how you will provide first aid
for the specific activity that you’re planning. Take into
account the participants, the potential injuries and how
far you will be from any emergency services.

WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING DO I NEED?
Some visits, particularly remote or high-risk
activities, will require a qualified first-aider, but not
all off-site activities and visits need this. However, all
staff leading activities do need basic first-aid knowledge.
They should be able to deal with minor injuries and know
when and how to call on additional support.

WHAT SHOULDN’T BE IN A FIRST-AID KIT?
First-aid kits are for items that you can use with
anyone. Search hse.gov.uk for ‘What to put in
a first-aid kit’. Medication, lotions and creams
should be kept in a separate bag.
Ensure that your first-aid kits are tailored to the activity,
environment and group size for each visit. For remote
areas, make sure that the kit is comprehensive and
accessible, with items stored in a waterproof bag.
