Discover the new
John Muir Award
The John Muir Award has relaunched with three
redesigned levels – Wild Places Guardian, Wild Places
Protector and Wild Places Champion – encouraging
people to connect with, enjoy and care for wild places.
Most participants complete their Award as part of an
organised group with a leader from organisations
including schools, community groups and outdoor
learning centres. Assessment is now web-based and
includes a requirement for young people to have an
active involvement in the decision-making and planning
of their Award.
John Muir Trust is offering free training workshops and
videos to support you to deliver the redesigned Award.

Important changes to Adventure Activities
Licensing from 1 April 2025
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has introduced
changes to the duration and inspection of Adventure
Activity Licences (AALA Licences), introducing
extensions up to three years and remote inspections
as standard for renewals. AALA is the licensing regime
for popular adventurous activities such as sailing,
kayaking, caving, climbing and skiing.
The changes will affect providers but should not mean
any changes for your visit preparation. If you are
planning activities in scope of AALA, you should check
that the provider has a valid AALA licence.

your educational visits?
A research briefing published by the UK Parliamentary
Office of Science and Technology included evidence for
the impact of learning outside the classroom on children’s
