Updates, revisions and new guidance for
Educational Visits Coordinators
taying on top of the latest guidance can be tough when you’re busy.
We’ve put together a selection of key guidance updates since
December to help you to keep track.

Since our last edition, OEAP National
Guidance has published two new
guidance documents: 7.1j Visiting
Cities (see below) and 7.2k Group
Safety in Crowded Places and 25
new Welsh language translations of
existing guidance. Other guidance
documents have been revised and
updated, including:
Risk management
1b (English and Welsh versions)
Foundations Updated with more
information on hazards and threats.
Consent
3.3g Checklist: Overseas Visit
Updated, including requirement of
evidence of consent from all those
with parental responsibility.
Parents and carers
3.2c Charging for School
Activities Major revision. Updates
include calculating whether a visit is
considered to be in school time (and
the implications for charging), and
information about Tax-Free Childcare
(and when this may be used to
contribute to the cost of a visit).
4.2a Group Management and
Supervision New section about staff
time off during visits, with some
related new guidance in the section
about night-time supervision.
3.4n Guidance for Parents New
sections on paying for visits and on
the benefits of educational visits.
4.3g Risk Management – what to
record and how Updated to add a
new subsection on using Artificial
Intelligence for risk assessment.
Activities
7.1d Trampoline Parks Updated to
include details of a pathway for
assessing the safety and voluntary
operational standards of trampoline
parks.
7.1j VISITING CITIES
NEW 7.1j Visiting Cities is particularly aimed at groups visiting new cities
or exploring areas of cities that they are unfamiliar with. It applies to UK
and overseas visits and includes guidance on risk assessment, group
management, communication and security awareness. It is also relevant
for visits to large public venues such as markets, stadiums, events and
festivals or large transport hubs.

7.1x Swimming Pools Updated to
include information about temporary
pop-up pools.
LEGISLATION UPDATES
Outdoor Education Bill (England)
The Outdoor Education Bill,
introduced by Tim Farron MP, had
its first reading in the House of
Commons and will be debated at
Second Reading in July. The Bill aims
to ensure that every child is offered
at least one outdoor education
experience during both primary
school and secondary school.
Schools (Residential Outdoor
Education) (Scotland) Bill
In Scotland, members of the
Education, Children and Young People
Committee published a report of its
inquiry into the Schools (Residential
Outdoor Education) (Scotland) Bill.
The Committee highlighted the
“hugely positive impact that outdoor
residential education can have on
the development and attainment of
children and young people”. It has
now begun its legislative process
and will be debated at Second
Reading in May.
