Spotlight on national guidance
SAFEGUARDING
“
All staff involved in
educational visits
should understand their
safeguarding responsibilities
Educational visits offer many positive benef its, but they also present potential
safeguarding risks that should be addressed during the planning process and
through vigilance on the visit
KNOW WHAT THE
GUIDANCE SAYS
All educational settings are required
to follow government guidance
on safeguarding as set out in
Department for Education (DfE)
guidance, Keeping Children Safe
in Education 2024 and Keeping
Learners Safe 2022 (Welsh Government).
This safeguarding responsibility applies to all
adults involved in educational visits, including
school staff, adult helpers and providers. In
addition, schools must monitor the actions of
all adults involved in a visit.
You should follow your employer’s and
establishment’s safeguarding policies and
ensure that everyone involved in a visit has
completed the appropriate training. All staff
involved in educational visits should understand
their safeguarding responsibilities.
Visit Leaders (and other adults as necessary)
need to be aware of any children and young
people who may be particularly vulnerable or
have specific safeguarding needs.
TALK TO YOUR DSL
When planning educational visits, talk to your
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) as early as
possible. They need to know about the visit and
will share with you any information that you may
need to consider.
They will also have plenty of advice on how
to meet your safeguarding responsibilities
while off-site.

OEAP National Guidance 4.3e Safeguarding
outlines safeguarding considerations as they
apply to visits away from the school site. It offers
guidance on such things as reporting concerns,
supervision, overnight stays, professional
boundaries and staff behaviour,
photography, mobile phones
and social media, and vetting
helpers and providers.
